ABOUT US

PEOPLE

Harvesting Heritage uses the food economy to activate economic development. We work with small, independent farmer families cultivating environmentally sustainable, nutritious, indigenous and heritage crops. These growers are often the most vulnerable members of society, living in remote locations with little access to markets. We create networks that bring farmers and chefs together, reconnecting city dwellers with traditional ingredients. Building mutually beneficial business relationships, creating profitable livelihoods and ensuring that South Africa’s edible ancestry takes its rightful place at the forefront of our nation’s delicious, nutritious daily diet.

PARTNER with us – Companies wanting to ensure that their spend on corporate social investments, ESG or enterprise development is impactful.

PLANET

The farmers, chefs, artisans and others working within Harvesting Heritage celebrate traditional tastes. They know that South African agriculture historically had a wide range of indigenous cereals, leafy greens, pulses, roots, tubers, fruits, seeds, nuts and farm animals. And that these ingredients were once the basis for many and varied delicious and nutritious foods that played a vital cultural and spiritual role in our society.

A combination of colonisation, cash cropping and apartheid resulted in many of these crops and animals being displaced by foreign foods. Displaced but not destroyed, many survive on the periphery of modern industrial agriculture. As the climate becomes ever more inhospitable, the adapted strengths of older indigenous plants and animals are becoming increasingly apparent. They can tolerate irregular rainfall and regionally specific pests. So, why not optimise your environmental footprint by working with Harvesting Heritage to create better market access for South Africa’s edible ancestry?

PLATE

Chefs working within Harvesting Heritage are inspired by local products and traditional techniques but they do not want to create a museum or a rose-tinted pastiche of the past. They are working together to create a conversation between ancient and modern within a regionally relevant contemporary culinary culture.

In order support this epicurean innovation, Harvesting Heritage stages culinary competitions and markets. These create opportunities for farmers to sell product and chefs to showcase our nation’s taste treasures.
